The Keelman Pub is a mix of contemporary and traditional styling which provides an excellent atmosphere. Enjoy the relaxing ambience of our bar with our range of fine ales, brewed in the traditional way in the Big Lamp Brewery next door. Our bar and restaranut has a warm, friendly atmosphere which is emphasised by the large conservatory which overlooks the patio and trees towards the river. The restaurant is a light and airy room with a small number of tables in the balcony area for diners who prefer more privacy. Our chef, using the very best fresh local produce, presides over a traditional menu with a range of exciting dishes to suit all tastes. Beers normally available include the renowned Prince Bishop Ale, award winning Big Lamp Bitter, Summerhill Stout and sometimes the formidable Blackout. The Keelman is named after the river Tyne boatmen of prior years. The menu changes on a regular basis, ranging from inexpensive sandwiches to well prepared bar lunches and dinners. A great attraction for the children is the adventure playground designed for tots to teens. "It's a real ale haven" pub review-The Evening Chronicle. The full text of the review is "The beers of the Big Lamp Brewery deserve to be served in impecable surroundings, writes Dave Clark. And they couldn't do much better than The Keelman, their brewery tap. Built in the same converted pumping station as the brewery itself, The Keelman has a tall, airy interior with huge arched windows looking out on a pretty corner of the Tyne Valley. It is named after the boatmen who transported coal down the river from Northumberland mines to waiting ships in the Port of Tyne, and is an ideal starting point for a saunter along the Keelman's Way bridle path. Inside, the bar is clearly designed for passing a peaceful half hour sampling the brewery's excellent selection of real ales. The decor and music are relaxing and low key, the seating well spaced and the service friendly. And for those who haven't yet acquired a taste for real ale, the German lager Bittburger and the Dutch wheat beer Hoegaarden make top notch refreshing alternatives." |
