Petersen Approved Installer Scheme - Overview

The scheme: recognising excellence

Through the scheme, which allows riggers to become Approved Installers of swaged terminals using the Petersen Swaging System, we aim to:

  • Encourage installers to achieve a recognised standard of work
  • Provide customer confidence in approved installers
  • Support the raising of standards across the marine industry

The standard: controlling results

BS EN 13411 is the European standard which controls the safety of steel wire-rope terminations. Part 8 is the section focussed on swaged terminals and swaging. To conform to the standard, the assembly of wire-rope and swaged termination must provide at least 90% of the wire-rope’s minimum breaking load (MBL) after 75,000 cycles of use.

The testing has two parts:

  • Fatigue test: This test consists of the application of a cyclic force between  15% and 30% of the minimum breaking force of the wire-rope along the rope axis for  75,000 cycles.
  • Tensile test: After the fatigue test, 80% of the minimum breaking force of the wire-rope is applied. The force is then increased to determine the residual breaking strength.

The system: consistent and reliable results

There are three key elements to the system:

  • The machine: The swaging machine must be a Wireteknik Roller Swaging Machine.
  • The consumables: Only Petersen Stainless CE marked swage terminals should be used, and the wire-ropes should comply with EN 10264-4:2012 and either EN 12385-4, EN 12385-5 or EN 12385-10.
  • The methodology: Swaged assemblies must only be produced by a trained operative. The operative must follow the instructions for safe use of the Petersen Swaging System.

Petersen assemblies have undergone independent testing to ensure swages produced in line with our system will provide this level of performance and can be issued with a certificate of conformity.

Swages produced using the Petersen method have been independently tested against BS EN 13411-8 and all passed both the cyclic load and tensile tests.

The benefits: for installers and their customers

An approved installer:

  • Is manufacturer-trained: They have been trained to use Petersen parts by Petersen, and have the support of Petersen’s expert marine team, which means your job is in the hands of the most knowledgeable people.
  • Uses an approved method: They follow a standardised installation procedure which complies with BS EN 13411-8, consistently delivering a reliable outcome.
  • Uses genuine parts: They use Petersen fittings, which are manufactured to exacting standards – we operate to an ISO 9001 quality system and are also certified to the much more stringent aerospace industry standard AS 9100.
  • Can give full traceability: They keep consistent and standardised records and document all work done, the parts and equipment used to do it, and the training of the installer, so customers can be reassured that equipment and parts can be traced and work can be verified, and that the installer working on the job holds valid training.
  • Uses calibrated equipment: They use specified and calibrated equipment to complete any swaging work, giving customers the confidence that the job has been completed accurately and consistently.
  • Is audited annually: They are audited regularly by Petersen, providing peace of mind that they meet Petersen’s industry-leading standards.

The process: get approved, stay approved

The process to approval is straightforward. After registering for the scheme, the installer received a starter pack, which includes everything they need to follow the Petersen System. They can then arrange optional training with our marine team – over the phone, via video call or on-site – before their on-site approval audit. This takes place at least three months after registration to ensure the installer has completed enough swages to be able to demonstrate their competence.

Once approved, the installer receives their approval pack, which allows them to publicise their approval for the year. And a year later, to maintain their approved installer status, they will undergo a surveillance audit to ensure they are still compliant.
